Get Pissed Off All Over Again!
Back in the August ’07 issue of Decibel, Anthony Bartkewicz and I bravely assembled a list of the Top 20 Death Metal Guitarists of All Time, fearing (but also strangely looking forward to) the inevitable message board dissections of our choices. After eight months of sleeping on it, I still stand by our selections (though based on his performance on Origin’s forthcoming Antithesis LP, Paul Ryan should certainly move up a few notches). At least we know an enterprising Italian fellow simply known as “Jeckill” agrees with us. In fact, he (it’s gotta be a he, right?) dug our Top 20 enough to create the following “photo-mentary” soundtracked by Death’s “Jealousy.”
But if you’re still fuming over the list, don’t worry—“loadtha6pounder” deftly articulates your displeasure in the video comments section.

You are correct - Paul Ryan should’ve been higher on that list.

Since you brought it up I will again say that it’s criminal that Uffe Cederlund wasn’t in the top two, let alone on the list. He invented the sound, man. I go back to that issue more than the others, save the Death Metal issue so I guess I can’t complain that much.

-Actually, it was Nicke Andersen who wrote the riffs to the early Entombed albums. He even did wrote and performed the leads in Like An Everflowing Stream by Dismember. He should definitely be higher on that list.

Hey dudes, while Nicke did indeed write many of the Nihilist and early Entomed riffs, it was their old guitarist Leif “Leffe” Cuzner who actually came up with that classic guitar sound.

Sorry. I love Nile but Karl is way too high on the list. The guy pretty much writes every song in Phrygian Dominant and…uhhh…phrygian dominant. Sorry, but it is still music and if we are ranking ‘best guitarists’ technical ability and range has to come into the equation. (the very reason I think Akerfeldt is a slot or two lower than he should be)
Tough choice at #1 too. I personally would have put Chuck Schuldiner at #1 but Trey is no slouch. But Chuck was probably the most imitated in the genre.
Oh and if you want a semi-controversial choice: Larry LaLonde. He did invent the death metal genre with Possessed afterall and can basically chop the heads off pretty much anyone on that list technically speaking.
